Stanley’s Camp is on the southern tip of the well-known Chief’s Island, in a private concession which borders the Moremi Game Reserve.
The camp is shaded by stands of ebony and sausage trees, and guests are accommodated in 8 East African style safari tents, set on raised platforms. The camp recreates the feel of the classic 19th Century safari, but with more comfort, as the tents have ceiling fans, and en suite bathrooms. Each tent also has a private deck with chairs and a hammock.
The central camp area is on raised decking, which allows for magnificent views of the surrounding floodplains. This area houses the lounge, and dining areas, set under an extensive canvas roof, which is supported by, and built round, a large sausage tree. The swimming pool and deck is set to one side of the central area.
Game which is frequently spotted in this area includes elephant, buffalo, lion, wild dog, giraffe and numerous plains game. Game drives takes place in the morning and afternoon/ evening. As the camp is in a private concession it means that the game drives can continue into the evening, there is also the chance of doing guided morning bush walks. The water levels change with the seasons, and during high season you are able to enjoy mokoro (dug-out) excursion – the most tranquil way of game viewing.
Stanley’s Camp also offers the unique and educational elephant interaction (there is an additional cost, and pre-booking is recommended). There is a morning excursion with 3 habituated elephants, where you get the chance to learn much about these fascinating animals. The excursion is finished with a picnic lunch in the bush.
